POKOTABI / Oden Seiji
おでん盛司
Located in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward, Oden Seiji is a cozy counter-service pub serving aromatic yakitori alongside a diverse spread of oden, from deeply simmered daikon radish and tender beef tendon to delicate yuba.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step through the door of Oden Seiji in Kyoto’s Nishikiomiyacho neighborhood, and you are greeted by an intimate space scented with the gentle aroma of dashi broth. The oden, simmered slowly in the pot, yields deep, savory flavor with every bite—from daikon radish soaked with broth right to the core, to tender beef tendon that falls apart easily. A dab of the accompanying yellow karashi mustard provides a crisp, piquant bite that balances the soothing broth.
The selection spans familiar staples like boiled eggs and deep-fried tofu (atsuage) alongside seasonal choices, including broth-infused yuba (tofu skin), juicy whole tomatoes, and kikuna (garland chrysanthemum) with its interplay of subtle bitterness and sweetness. Kitsune udon is also on hand, letting diners savor the seasoned broth down to the last drop as a comforting finish to the meal.
Yakitori serves as the second pillar of the menu, with skewers like chicken thigh, neck (seseri), and yagen cartilage served piping hot straight from the grill. To pair with the food, the bar pours cold beer along with a solid lineup of sake—including labels like Hakushika, Kenbishi, and Tosatsuru—and refreshing citrus-accented chuhai.
With only about 7 to 8 seats centered around the counter, the scale is small and welcoming, making it easy for solo diners to settle in comfortably. The shop is open from 17:00 to 22:00 in the evening (closed Wednesdays), and payment is cash only.
